Thursday Thirteen...

Gah it has been forever since we have posted but as previously disclosed Sharon is a hockey player and she hadn't managed to get out of the way of some huge amazon type woman and in her attempt to take the puck from Amazon Woman she ended up with a broken leg...and my excuse? Well I have plenty. What matters though is in spite of those excuses I'm back to do a TT and use Sharon's injury as inspiration. Everything on this list is a good thing to take over to a sick or injured friend.

If you would like the recipe for any of our ~TT~ lists leave a comment and we will post it. Soon even!

1. tomato soup…my favorite recipe takes very little time and can be found here... http://thepioneerwoman.com/cooking/2008/02/sherried_tomato_soup/
The only changes that I made is I left out the sherry and I use my immersion blender to make the soup smooth. It is a texture preference. Couple this with some homemade croutons and you will be the best friend for life!
2. Lasagna. Who does not appreciate a casserole when they aren't feeling good? It feeds the family. Bring a salad and maybe garlic bread to round it out or even on its own it will be welcomed. There are many ways to make lasagna and I will put mine up as it mixes some easy shortcuts without sacrificing flavor.
3. Chicken and Dumplings. The version that I have as a go to does not have the pillowy dumplings. Mine are thick and rustic. They pillow up some and when you mix in chives? Oh forget about it!
4. Chili. I know another thing that takes a long time to fix? Nope I got a short cut. Get your favorite chili from the store and doctor it up. Dump in a couple cans of diced tomatoes, I really like how they have flavored ones available now. With chili I like to use the tomatoes that have diced green chilies in them. A little spice and huge flavor boost. I like to also sweat some diced onions to give them a head start before adding them in. Make some corn bread muffins as a side and you are all set.
5. A tea basket goes a long way. Yeah I know it isn't cooking but it is worth a mention. Get your friend a cup that they might like and then a few different types of tea. I like the brand Stash right now. The lemon ginger tea is wonderful though they have several to pick from. Anything with lemon when someone is sick seems to be comforting. A small basket to put it in, maybe some honey straws to sweeten with. Add a few fresh lemons....perhaps a book they might enjoy added for good measure.
6. Breakfast Burritos are always a big winner cause you can wrap them in foil and they will stay warm for awhile. At least enough time to take to your friend and so very easy to warm up. Use combinations like scrambled eggs and sausage with cheese in a tortilla. I like to put avocado slices in mine cause it gives a nice creamy flavor without mayo. You can put just about anything into it including cooked potatoes, chives, onion...peppers...a chipotle sauce with fried jalapenos, sausage, cheese and scrambled eggs? It is like heaven I tell you!
7. Muffins need any further explanation?
8. Tuna Casserole. There again are many ways to make this classic and some even come in the Tuna Helper type boxes. But home made can be amazing.
9. Mac and Cheese.
10. If your friend has a certain favorite food, or perhaps you know their mom makes something that your friend has always loved then try to get that recipe either from your friend or their mom. Even if it doesn't taste just the same cause the mom does it no one could ever make it just like her...but the effort will be appreciated.
11. Chicken Salad on Croissants. Get one of those already roasted chickens from the grocery store and make some chicken salad. Take over a favorite sandwich bread or croissants.
12. Drinks....Gatorade and orange juice. Perhaps a bottle of wine. That always makes Sharon feel better :)
13. Cookies, cakes, and pie oh my! Sweet stuff always gets someone feeling a little better and you can ix it up with different flavors, savory and sweet, fruit filled or rich and decadent with pastry cream.

No matter what the inspiration is drawn from a friend feeling down or hurt can always use something to soothe their soul and why not do it through food?
